Being a leader is a great thing, it means you fill a position of power, influence and responsibly.? However, despite the positive connotations there are some less-than-desirable leadership roles lurking in the shadows.? Abstain from any missteps by familiarizing yourself with the 4 roles worth avoiding.? ??
The Out-of-Touch Leader
There is no better way to de-motivate the people around you than to be out of touch.? The out-of-touch leader has the potential to be tuned-out when it comes to the organization, employees and (yikes!) even customers.
Refrain from this role by experiencing your products and services in another person?s shoes. For example, if you run an ecommerce relate to your customers by going through the process of purchasing something off your site. ?How smooth was the experience, in what ways could it be improved?? By tuning into the other people who experience your business you will gain a fresh perspective and open your eyes to possible areas of improvement.
The Big-Step Leader
You?ll be able to spot the big-step leader because it is likely they are biting their nails or pacing the floor ready to make a huge leap?eventually.? The big-step leader?s biggest misstep is that he or she takes far too little steps; over-analyzing every big move wastes time and can slow productivity to a molasses pace.
Reject this role by valuing the importance of continuous baby steps rather than giant leaps.? A goal is powered by its checkpoints. By taking steps every day to reach your goals you gain insight, motivation, consistency and most important, confidence in your continuing efforts.
The Self-Centered Leader
It is the self-centered leader who fosters a near-sided focus.? This leader tends to only narrow in on his or her immediate world without considering the rest of the industry.? What this leader commonly forgets is that there is someone (or rather something) that is bigger than his or her business, the market itself.
Resist this role by reaching out for opinions and insight other than just your own.? Put this into practice through social media efforts and check-up on your competition to gain insight into what?s trending in their worlds.
The Results-Only Leader
The process is the heartiest part of a journey because that is where the lessons lie. ??However, for the result-only leader, the only thing that matters is the end point.? Unfortunately, results are not constants, they are variables.? A result (whether good or bad) holds no guarantee that it will repeat itself.
Resist this role by still keeping your eye on the big picture, but basing plans for the future on past experiences, not just results.? You can put this into practice by checking in with your employees (or yourself) and defining the biggest hurdles and biggest lessons learned from each experience.? To be open to self critiquing and constructive criticisms will only leave room for improvement.
