Analysis: Israeli attack in Syria could trigger Iran reaction

Cnbc's Michelle Carusa Cabrerra reports that sources have told NBC News Israeli warplanes have attacked a convoy of trucks believed to be carrying weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israelis understood something was up earlier this week when two of the country?s five Iron Dome anti-missile defense systems were moved north to protect Israel?s third largest town, Haifa. The government said the deployment was routine.

This was followed by a flurry of press reports, all quoting anonymous official sources, warning that Israel would not allow Syria and Hezbollah to cross its so-called "red lines."

That meant if Syria attempted to transfer any of its advanced rockets or non-conventional weaponry, such as chemical or biological agents, to Hezbollah, the Shiite militia in southern Lebanon, Israel would halt the move by force.

Ever since the start of the Arab Spring, Israel has had one overriding principle: Stay out. But when that principle came up against its "red lines," the military risk appears to have outweighed the political risk.

Wednesday night a convoy of trucks was attacked by warplanes in Syria, near the border with Lebanon, according to U.S. and regional officials. From Israel ? silence. It is believed the convoy was carrying advanced Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which can hit multiple targets, including fighter jets, helicopters and drones, within 40 miles. They would remove Israel?s critical freedom of flight over Lebanon.

The stakes were raised later by what Syrian state television said was an attack by Israeli warplanes against a military research center northwest of the country's capital, Damascus. There was no confirmation that the target was an advanced weapons collection depot.

From Israel?s point of view, it would be better to stop these weapons from falling into the hands of what it calls terrorists, who could then intimidate all of northern Israel and much of the rest of the country, too, rather than wait for Hezbollah to get them and then have to respond. Prevention rather than reaction.

But the attack implies that Israel feels compelled to join the battle -- not to protect either side in the Syrian conflict but rather to protect its own security. And this move would send a clear message to Israel?s ultimate enemy, the regional power that backs both the Syrian regime and Hezbollah: Iran.

Iran has long threatened to destroy Israel, and Hezbollah is part of its arsenal. Israel choking off the supply of weapons to Hezbollah limits Iran?s future threat against Israel.

Israel never confirms these kinds of attacks. But a comment Tuesday from the head of Israel?s air force didn?t mince words. Major-General Amir Eshel said at a conference that Israel is involved in a ?war between wars? and that "this campaign is 24/7, 365 days a year. We are taking action to reduce the immediate threats, to create better conditions in which we will be able to win the wars, when they happen."

Beginner's Guide to the NFL 2013 "Non-playing" Season

Greetings to all you WCG faithful. The NFL season for the beloved Chicago Bears has ended (much sooner than we would all have liked) and now we move on to the part of the calendar which many fans believe to be a barren wasteland of inactivity and longing for the new season to start. I'm hear to provide some solace in the fact that even though we won't get to witness the Bears dominate *crosses fingers* on the field, we do get to watch them dominate *crosses toes* in the front office. The MVP of the next few months won't even be on the field during the games. He'll be the guy wearing the suit and glasses sitting in the war room and making the decisions. So, without further ado, here is my guide to the "non-playing" season of the NFL in 2013. I hope you enjoy, feel free to comment, and as always BEAR DOWN!

February 2 -- Texas vs. Nation College All-Star Game, Eagle Stadium, Allen, Texas.

If nothing else, this will provide us with the opportunity to see some future stars on the field one last time before the draft. Also, it reminds me of when Texas tried to secede from the union. Good times.

February 3 -- Super Bowl XLVII, Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Here it is. The big game. Bears Vs. Colts.......wait........what happened? Where am I?????..............It's ok everyone, I just blacked out and thought I was back in a time when the Bears were still playing at this time of year....sigh.

February 9-10 -- Regional Combine, Orange Coast College-Lebard Stadium, Los Angeles, California

February 16 -- Regional Combine, Methodist Training Center (Texans), Houston, Texas

February 17 -- Regional Combine, Cleveland Browns Training Facility, Cleveland, Ohio

These three events are pretty much the actual combine, except, as the title might suggest, it's regional. Moving on.

February 20-26 -- Combine Timing and Testing, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.

The "Underwear Olympics" as it has been dubbed by some, is the main event of pre-draft evaluation. Pretty much every player with a chance to be drafted is gonna be there showing their stuff. They'll attempt to run, jump, and lift their way to a higher draft pick in front of virtually every single team decision-maker and scout. Plus, Rich Eisen runs the 40 in a suit, then they super-impose him running onto the fastest and slowest players running, so that's kinda funny.

March 2-3 -- Regional Combine, Atlantic Health Jets Training Facility, New York/New Jersey

March 9 -- Regional Combine, One Buccaneer Place, Tampa, Florida

March 10 -- Regional Combine, Halas Hall (Bears), Chicago, Illinois

Hooray for more regional combines! Oh and look! One of them is at Halas Hall! That must be where the guys from Abeline Christian go. It's the only possible explanation.

March 9-11 -- Clubs are permitted to enter into contract negotiations with certified agents of players who will be Unrestricted Free Agents at the end of the current League Year.

Here we get an early chance to negotiate with players such as Brian Urlacher, Henry Melton, and Lance Louis before anyone else can steal them away. I'm hoping the Bears re-sign those three along with Geno Hayes, Nick Roach, Amobi Okoye, and maybe a few others. The rest should be able to test the open market later in the Month.

March 12 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must exercise options for 2013 on all players who have option clauses in their 2012 contracts.

March 12 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must submit Qualifying Offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation.

March 12 -- Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must submit a minimum salary offer to retain exclusive negotiating rights to their players with expiring 2012 contracts and who have fewer than three seasons of free agency credit.

The Bears don't have many RFAs, and the only one that I would say they try hard to retain is Nate Collins.

March 12 -- All 2012 player contracts will expire at 4:00 p.m., New York time.

March 12 -- Top-51 Begins. All clubs must be under the Salary Cap prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time.

Ah, yes. The ever-looming Salary Cap. It has been estimated that the Bears have about $13M in cap space as of right now. That's not a ton, but I think it should be enough to resign some of our guys as well as land a couple Free Agents from other teams.

March 12 -- The 2013 League Year and Free Agency period begin at 4:00 p.m., New York time.

And so begins the Free Agency Frenzy. Look for the Bears to target offensive linemen and/or tight ends. Possible players include Brandon Albert, Jake Long, Andy Levitre, Dustin Keller, and Dennis Pitta.

March 12 -- Trading period begins at 4:00 p.m., New York time, for 2013 after expiration of all 2012 contracts.

This day also marks the beginning of the trading period, which provides a new pool of available players for the Bears to target as well as trade away.

March 16-17 -- Regional Combine, Atlanta Falcons Training Facility, Atlanta, Georgia

Goodness gracious, there sure are a lot of regional combines. Ugh.

March 17-20 -- Annual League Meeting, The Biltmore, Phoenix, Arizona.

League leaders meet here and discuss rule changes, safety tips, etc. Big events don't usually happen here, but occasionally they change the spot of the kickoff or something like that.

March 23-24 -- Regional Combine, Virginia Mason Athletic Center (Seahawks), Seattle, Washington

March 23-24 -- Regional Combine, Baltimore Ravens Training Facility, Baltimore, Maryland

OK I'm gonna go ahead and say it. I officially hate regional combines. There are far too many of them.

April 7-8 -- Super Regional Combine, Cowboys Stadium, Dallas, Texas

Ooooooh look who thinks they're all fancy with their Super regional combine. Jerry gets more and more full of himself by the day.

April 25-27 -- NFL Draft, New York City, New York.

It's here! It's here! This is the day when every team and their fans look to the future and hope to come away with at least one new superstar. Some may become such stars, but others will most certainly become Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, or Mark "Butt-fumble" Sanchez. That is to say, disappointments of epic and unmatched proportions.

May 20-22 -- NFL Spring League Meeting, Hyatt-Harborside, Boston, Massachusetts.

Another meeting of the league brass where they again discuss the rules, regulations, and practices of the league and it's players. Fun stuff.

September 5, 8-9 -- NFL Kickoff 2013

Holy Ditka it has come! The day when all is right in the world again! The time of year when every team (except the Lions) have Super Bowl aspirations and every team has the same record. So begins the dramatic race to the top of the league, and to the ever-charished Lombardi Trophy.

So that about wraps it up. I look forward to the next few months of discussing and debating all of these events with you all and cheering on our Bears during the offseason.

Health insurance to burn smokers ? Bankrate, Inc.

If you're a smoker, this would be an excellent year to kick the habit.

One of the less contentious provisions of health care reform allows health insurance companies to jack the premiums on individual policyholders who smoke by up to 50 percent beginning next January.

Come Jan. 1, 2014, you can no longer be denied coverage because of your gender, weight, health or lifestyle under health care reform.

But if you don't give up smoking, your health insurance could get awfully expensive by this time next year. A 55-year-old smoker could be looking at a premium hike of $4,250 per year, while the smoker's penalty for a 60-year-old could approach $5,100, according to The Associated Press.

Unfair, you say? Consider this: According to a 2011 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, employees who smoke cost their employer's insurance plan more than $10,000 in additional expenses and more than $5,000 in extra premiums annually. Who's picking up that bill? You guessed it: nonsmoking co-workers.

Little wonder that a growing number of employers, especially in health care, are turning down job applicants who smoke and are imposing no-smoking policies inside and outside the office, despite laws in 29 states and the District of Columbia that prohibit discrimination against smokers.

In the big picture, smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke causes 443,000 premature deaths and costs the nation $193 billion in health bills and lost productivity every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Who picks up that bill? We all do, whether we smoke or not.

Younger smokers won't be hit as hard as older smokers by the coming insurance rate hikes?under rules proposed last fall by the Obama administration. And the federal law does permit states to limit or change the smoking penalty as they see fit.

On the bright side,?thanks to the broad expansion of preventive care services under the Affordable Care Act, it's pretty easy to find a smoking cessation program through your insurer or employer these days that won't cost you a dime out of pocket.

Super Bowl Appearances and Real Estate Prices

Do Real Estate Prices Influence Super Bowl Appearances?

The RealEstate.com team recently looked at the number of times NFL teams have appeared in the Super Bowl and the real estate prices of their home cities. We found something interesting.

Of the 10 NFL teams that have appeared in the Super Bowl the most, seven are from cities with high median home prices, when compared to the national median home price. The opposite is also true; the 10 teams that have been to the Super Bowl the least, if they have even gone at all, generally come from cities with low median home prices.

The following question begs to be asked: Is there a correlation between the real estate prices of the city an NFL team comes from and the number of times that team has been to the Super Bowl?

NFL teams From Cities with High Real Estate Prices Tend to Succeed

The following facts support the existence of a correlation between Super Bowl appearances and high real estate prices:

• The 10 teams that have been to the Super Bowl the most come from cities with an average median home price (i.e., the average of the median home prices for all 10 cities) of $339,800.
• The 10 teams that have been to the Super Bowl the least come from cities with an average median home price of $212,450.
• The average median home price of the 10 teams that have been to the Super Bowl the most is significantly higher than the national median home price ($216,700) and the average median home price of all the cities that host NFL teams ($243,341).

Consider some examples of teams and cities that adhere to this possible correlation. San Francisco?s median home price, $751,600, is one of the highest in America. The city also hosts a team that has been to five Super Bowls. The median home price in Washington, D.C., $443,700, is twice that of the national median, and the Redskins have made five trips to the big game. One of New York?s two teams, the Giants, has been to the Super Bowl five times as well; the Big Apple has the high median home price of $517,900.

Real Estate Prices Not Always an Indicator

There are significant exceptions to this hypothetical correlation, however. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, and Green Bay Packers, three of the NFL?s most illustrious teams, come from cities with low median home prices. Pittsburgh, for example, has a median home price of $92,500, which is a whopping 57.3 percent lower than the national median.

There are also exceptions at the opposite end of the table. Some teams that have rarely been to the Super Bowl come from cities with very high real estate prices. Two of America?s most expensive housing markets, San Diego and Seattle, have only been to the Super Bowl once. If there really were a correlation, the Chargers and Seahawks would consistently be two of the best teams in the NFL.

Did this Correlation Exist in the 2012-2013 NFL Season?

Partially. San Francisco has high real estate prices, but Baltimore does not; its median home price of $168,400 is 22.3 percent lower than the national median. If real estate prices always determined who made it to the big game, teams like the Giants, Seahawks, or even the Raiders would be playing on Feb. 3.

The teams from the cities with higher real estate prices won exactly half of the playoff games they played in. In the quarterfinals, New England and San Francisco advanced while Denver and Seattle were felled. New England then succumbed to defeat in the semifinals, yet San Francisco was able to produce a last-minute victory and advance to the Super Bowl.

'Shameless,' 'Californication,' 'House of Lies' renewed by Showtime

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Showtime has renewed its series "Shameless," "Californication" and "House of Lies," the network said Tuesday.

The announcement comes two weeks after all three series posted record ratings with their season premieres.

All three series have also showed year-to-year growth with their current seasons, with the third season of "Shameless" growing 22 percent over its previous season so far, "House of Lies" averaging 10 percent over its first season and "Californication" showing a 21 percent boost over its fifth season so far.

"'Californication,' 'House of Lies' and 'Shameless' possess highly distinctive comedic voices, and given that all three continue to grow their audience season after season - the pick-up decision was easy," Showtime Networks' president of entertainment David Nevins, said of the renewals. "I am incredibly excited to see what each of these series has in store for their next seasons."

On their January 13 season premieres, "Shameless," "House of Lies" and "Californication" drew 2 million, 1.19 million and 1.07 million total viewers respectively, reaching series highs and showing double-digit boosts over their previous seasons' averages.

Japan PM says open to summit with China to help economic ties

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Tuesday he was open to a meeting with Chinese leaders to rebuild ties damaged by a territorial dispute but said there was no room for negotiations on their row over a group of small islands.

The remarks came after China's Communist Party chief, Xi Jinping, told a Japanese envoy sent to Beijing last week that he was committed to developing bilateral ties and would consider holding a summit meeting.

Relations between the world's second- and third-largest economies plunged after the Japanese government bought three disputed islands from a private owner last September, sparking anti-Japan protests across China. Some Japanese businesses were looted and Japanese citizens attacked.

"It is precisely because we have a problem that we should hold the summit between leaders and have high-level talks," Abe said on a television program. "I would like to consider a top-level summit if circumstances allow."

The conservative prime minister has just increased the defense budget for the first time in 11 years and swept back to power in a December election calling for the protection of Japan's "beautiful seas".

He reiterated Japan's stance on the islands, which it controls. Japan calls them the Senkaku while China calls them the Diaoyu.

"The Senkaku Islands are our land and China has taken provocative steps against them ... we have been clear that there is no room for negotiation on this matter," he said.

"But on top of that, there's an economic relationship. Japan invests in China and reaps benefits from exporting its goods there while China creates job places thanks to Japanese investment," said Abe, adding that maintaining strong economic ties were vital for both countries.

"If top-level meeting was necessary to achieve that, we should do it and from that point on rebuild our relationship."

Penicillin, not the pill, may have launched the sexual revolution

Jan. 28, 2013 ? The rise in risky, non-traditional sexual relations that marked the swinging '60s actually began as much as a decade earlier, during the conformist '50s, suggests an analysis recently published by the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

"It's a common assumption that the sexual revolution began with the permissive attitudes of the 1960s and the development of contraceptives like the birth control pill," notes Emory University economist Andrew Francis, who conducted the analysis. "The evidence, however, strongly indicates that the widespread use of penicillin, leading to a rapid decline in syphilis during the 1950s, is what launched the modern sexual era."

As penicillin drove down the cost of having risky sex, the population started having more of it, Francis says, comparing the phenomena to the economic law of demand: When the cost of a good falls, people buy more of the good.

"People don't generally think of sexual behavior in economic terms," he says, "but it's important to do so because sexual behavior, just like other behaviors, responds to incentives."

Syphilis reached its peak in the United States in 1939, when it killed 20,000 people. "It was the AIDS of the late 1930s and early 1940s," Francis says. "Fear of catching syphilis and dying of it loomed large."

Penicillin was discovered in 1928, but it was not put into clinical use until 1941. As World War II escalated, and sexually transmitted diseases threatened the troops overseas, penicillin was found to be an effective treatment against syphilis.

"The military wanted to rid the troops of STDs and all kinds of infections, so that they could keep fighting," Francis says. "That really sped up the development of penicillin as an antibiotic."

Right after the war, penicillin became a clinical staple for the general population as well. In the United States, syphilis went from a chronic, debilitating and potentially fatal disease to one that could be cured with a single dose of medicine.

From 1947 to 1957, the syphilis death rate fell by 75 percent and the syphilis incidence rate fell by 95 percent. "That's a huge drop in syphilis. It's essentially a collapse," Francis says.

In order to test his theory that risky sex increased as the cost of syphilis dropped, Francis analyzed data from the 1930s through the 1970s from state and federal health agencies. Some of the data was only available on paper documents, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) digitized it at the request of Francis.

For his study, Francis chose three measures of sexual behavior: The illegitimate birth ratio; the teen birth share; and the incidence of gonorrhea, a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that tends to spread quickly.

"As soon as syphilis bottoms out, in the mid- to late-1950s, you start to see dramatic increases in all three measures of risky sexual behavior," Francis says.

While many factors likely continued to fuel the sexual revolution during the 1960s and 1970s, Francis says the 1950s and the role of penicillin have been largely overlooked. "The 1950s are associated with prudish, more traditional sexual behaviors," he notes. "That may have been true for many adults, but not necessarily for young adults. It's important to recognize how reducing the fear of syphilis affected sexual behaviors."

A few physicians sounded moralistic warnings during the 1950s about the potential for penicillin to affect behavior. Spanish physician Eduardo Martinez Alonso referenced Romans 6:23, and the notion that God uses diseases to punish people, when he wrote: "The wages of sin are now negligible. One can almost sin with impunity, since the sting of sinning has been removed."

Such moralistic approaches, equating disease with sin, are counterproductive, Francis says, stressing that interventions need to focus on how individuals may respond to the cost of disease.

He found that the historical data of the syphilis epidemic parallels the contemporary AIDS epidemic. "Some studies have indicated that the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy for treating HIV may have caused some men who have sex with men to be less concerned about contracting and transmitting HIV, and more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors," Francis says.

"Policy makers need to take into consideration behavioral responses to changes in the cost of disease, and implement strategies that are holistic and longsighted," he concludes. "To focus exclusively on the defeat of one disease can set the stage for the onset of another if preemptive measures are not taken."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three months after Superstorm Sandy ravaged coastal areas in much of the Northeast, Congress on Monday sent a $50.5 billion emergency relief measure for storm victims to President Barack Obama for his signature.

"I commend Congress for giving families and businesses the help they deserve, and I will sign this bill into law as soon as it hits my desk," Obama said in a statement late Monday.

Despite opposition from conservatives concerned about adding billions of dollars more to the nation's debt, the Senate cleared the long-delayed bill, 62-36, after House Republicans had stripped it earlier this month of spending unrelated to disasters. All 36 votes against the bill were from Republican senators.

"This is a huge relief," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., noting the vote came 91 days after Sandy struck.

The House passed the bill two weeks ago. Lawmakers say the money is urgently needed to start rebuilding homes, businesses, public transportation facilities and other infrastructure damaged by the Oct. 29 storm, one of the worst to strike the Northeast.

Sandy roared up the East Coast and is blamed for more than 130 deaths and tens of billions of dollars in property damage, particularly in New York and New Jersey. The measure is aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and local governments rebuild.

The biggest chunk of money is $16 billion for Housing and Urban Development Department community development block grants. Of that, about $12.1 billion will be shared among Sandy victims as well as those from other federally declared disasters in 2011-2013. The remaining $3.9 billion is solely for Sandy-related projects.

More than $11 billion will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief aid fund for providing shelter, restoring power and other storm-interrupted utility services and meeting other immediate needs arising from Sandy and other disasters. Another $10 billion is devoted to repairing New York and New Jersey transit systems and making them more resistant to future storms.

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., said Republicans weren't seeking "to undermine" help for Sandy victims but instead were trying to make sure that the money was actually being spent on emergency needs.

"We're simply trying to say we need some standards," Coats said.

Earlier in January, Congress approved and Obama signed a $9.7 billion bill to replenish the National Flood Insurance Program, which has received well over 100,000 flood insurance claims related to Sandy. Added to the new, $50.5 billion package, the total is roughly in line with the $60.4 billion that Obama requested in December.

The aid package was greased for passage before the last Congress adjourned and the new one came in on Jan. 3. But Speaker John Boehner refused to bring it to the floor after two-thirds of House Republicans voted against a "fiscal cliff" deficit-reduction deal raising taxes on couples making more than $450,000 a year while deferring some $24 billion in spending cuts to defense and domestic programs.

The ruckus after the Senate had passed an earlier $60.4 billion Sandy relief package by a nearly 2-to-1 margin on Dec. 28 exposed deep political divisions within Republican ranks. "There's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims, the House majority and their speaker, John Boehner," Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fumed at the time.

Top House Republicans responded by bringing new Sandy aid legislation to the floor under ground rules designed to win over as many Republicans as possible while retaining support from Democrats eager to approve as much in disaster aid as possible.

GOP leaders cut spending in the Senate bill unrelated to disasters. One would have transferred $1 billion for training Iraqi policemen to instead be used to bolster security at U.S. diplomatic missions. The shift in money followed a Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Also deleted were $188 million for an Amtrak expansion project that included new, long-planned tunnels from New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan, and another $150 million for fisheries disasters that states such as Alaska and Mississippi could have shared.

After all the cost-cutting, 179 House Republicans still voted against the disaster aid package with only 49 favoring it. GOP leaders had to rely on yes votes from 192 Democrats to pass it.

As with past natural disasters, the Sandy aid bill is not offset with spending cuts, meaning the aid adds to the deficit. The lone exception is an offset provision requiring that $3.4 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects to protect against future storms be covered by an equal amount of unspecified spending cuts in other programs before next October.

The Senate on Monday rejected, 35-62, an attempt by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to amend the final package Monday with a provision to cut federal programs across the board by one-half of 1 percent through 2021 as a way to prevent the disaster aid from swelling the U.S. debt.

As of Monday, FEMA said it spent $3.3 billion in disaster relief money for shelter, restoring power and other immediate needs arising from the storm.

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Ohio, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia have shared that money.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Major League Baseball said it is "extremely disappointed" about new allegations of performance-enhancing drug use against Alex Rodriguez and other players contained in a newspaper report.

The Miami New Times, a popular alternative weekly, said in a story Tuesday that it had obtained files through an employee at a recently closed clinic in south Florida that show Rodriguez purchased HGH and other substances.

"We are always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances. ... Through our Department of Investigations, we have been actively involved in the issues in South Florida," MLB's statement said.

Rodriguez, the New York Yankees slugger currently recovering from hip surgery, has admitted using steroids from 2001-03 but insisted he stopped after that.

"We fully support the Commissioner's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. This matter is now in the hands of the Commissioner's Office," the Yankees said in a statement. "We will have no further comment until that investigation has concluded."

Other players named by the New Times as appearing in the records at Biogenesis include Melky Cabrera, Gio Gonzalez, Bartolo Colon and Nelson Cruz. Cabrera, the All-Star game MVP for the San Francisco Giants last season, was suspended 50 games in August for failing a drug test. The outfielder has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as a free agent.

Colon, a pitcher for the Oakland A's, was also suspended 50 games in August.

Gonzalez, who went 21-8 for the Washington Nationals last season, and Cruz, who hit 24 home runs for the Texas Rangers, had not previously been linked to performance-enhancing drugs.

The Rangers said in a statement that after being contacted by the New Times late last week, they notified Major League Baseball. The club said it had no further comment.

Gonzalez posted on his Twitter feed: "I've never used performance enhancing drugs of any kind and I never will, I've never met or spoken with tony Bosch or used any substance."

The report said that the notes of clinic chief Anthony Bosch list the players' names and the substances they received, including human growth hormone and steroids. Several unidentified employees and clients confirmed to the publication that the clinic distributed the substances, the paper said. The employees said that Bosch bragged of supplying drugs to professional athletes but they never saw the sports stars in the office.

Any player found by MLB to use banned, performance-enhancing substances, is subject to suspension.

Girl saves mom suffering diabetic attack

A fast thinking 9-year-old Illinois girl was able to help guide her mother to safety after the woman suffered a diabetic attack while driving at speeds of up to 70 mph.

Jennifer Sheridan, 42, was driving her daughter Aleksandra to McDonald's in Frankfort, Ill., after the two had attended a high school basketball game on the evening of Jan. 18. Sheridan, who has type 2 diabetes, had a diabetic attack when her blood sugar suddenly dropped. She told ABCNews.com that she was not aware of what was happening.

"I was still conscious, and talking, my daughter said. I don't remember any of that," Sheridan said. "We went through, she says, a red light, and then I know I kept saying, 'We have to stop.' That was in my mind, but it wasn't clicking."

Sheridan said that they passed her house and the McDonald's. Aleksandra was screaming and crying during the wayward drive, which she says must have lasted 15 to 20 minutes, but kept talking to her mother.

"She says she kept telling me different things, that I was going too fast, or too slow," Sheridan said.

While the car was still moving, Sheridan's husband called. She said that Aleksandra was on phone screaming that they were going off the road.

Her car eventually veered to the right, through a small ditch and a group of trees. At that point Aleksandra turned the car off, preventing the still moving car from hitting a tree.

Luckily, both mother and daughter were unharmed. Once the car was off, Aleksandra slowly fed her mother a chocolate bar that was in the car's cup holder.

"Once we were stopped and she could focus, she fed me," Sheridan said. "She said, 'I kept just giving little pieces so you wouldn't choke.'"

Police and the fire department were called to the scene by a passerby who saw the incident. The story also caught local media attention from WBBM-TV and Fox News.

Sheridan says the next thing she actually remembers was being in the ambulance. Police who arrived on the scene congratulated Aleksandra, and even gave her a yellow duck toy, which they call the "Golden Duck Award for Heroes."

This is not the first time Aleksandra has come to her mom's aid when she had a diabetic attack. Two years ago, while they were in their home, the girl called 911 when she found her mother on the kitchen floor.

Sheridan said that she is now using an insulin pump, which is designed to eliminate lows in blood sugar in diabetics. She said that she will soon be on the list for a new pancreas. With a daughter and a 16-year-old son with cerebral palsy, she says she needs to be in top form. For now, she's happy that both she and Aleksandra are unscathed.

"Every day, I wake up and think, 'Yes!'" she said.

Sundance 2013: Sony Pictures Classics acquires festival hit "Before Midnight"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Sony Pictures Classics has acquired "Before Midnight," one of the best-reviewed films at the Sundance Film Festival. Richard Linklater's film is the third installment in his series that began with "Before Sunrise."

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as Celine and Jesse, two people with an undeniable attraction who run into each other for brief bouts of romance every several years. In this case, the setting is Greece, with the characters now in their early 40s.

Linklater wrote and directed the film, which premiered on Sunday. He also produced it with Christos V. Konstantakopoulos and Sara Woodhatch.

"In 1991 we were in Sundance with ?Slacker' and we witnessed the birth of a major American filmmaker. At Sundance 2013 with ?Before Midnight,' we have further confirmation that Richard Linklater is a film master at the peak of his form," Sony Pictures Classic said in a statement. "This one has it all as entertainment and as a work of cinematic art. It is a perfect movie made by not one but three auteurs, Rick, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy. This movie will be incredibly successful around the world."

Cinetic Media chief John Sloss, who was selling the movie, told TheWrap earlier this week that this movie had received the best reviews of any movie he's worked on.

Indiewire's Eric Kohn called it "masterful" in his review, writing that Linklaker "has completed one of the finest movie trilogies of all time." He gave the movie an A+.

While it has a built-in audience, the conversation-heavy movie is not considered a potential box-office sensation.

Women in the U.S. Military and Combat, by the Numbers

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Thursday removed the direct ground combat exclusion rule for women in the U.S. military. The White House called the move "another historic step toward harnessing the talents and skills of all our citizens." Panetta, after gaining unanimous approval from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also announced the removal of gender-based barriers to service.

Although relatively new in a department-wide policy shift, women have been in combat situations throughout our nation's history.

237,000: The number of positions in the U.S. military in which women cannot serve. NPR reports many combat positions are infantry roles in the U.S. Army. A smaller number of combat positions exist in the Marine Corps. All branches of the service have until May 15 to make plans for integration of women into combat roles. Of the new positions open, 184,000 are in combat arms professions.

1.4 million: The number of active duty military personnel currently in the U.S. Armed Forces.

14,000: The number of new military job assignment opportunities that opened up for women after policy changes last February . All but 1,000 of them were in the Army with positions such as tank mechanic and field artillery radar operator.

280,000: The number of women deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001. More than 150 women have been killed and 800 wounded due to action in both countries. Women often serve as helicopter pilots in war zones and as rescue pilots.
